Make the Most of the End of the School Year

Image
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:" Ecclesiastes 3:1   If you are wondering how to bring closure to the end of the school year, or how to continue productive learning when it is so beautiful outside, you are not alone. The end of the school year can be one big time waster after another - if you let it. To make the most of the time I have left in the school year, I try not to schedule any new curriculum to learn in June. Instead, I take the time to reinforce the learning that took place throughout the year through reviewing, revisiting and reflecting.   At the end I'll show you an easy way to do it, in one amazing step!   Review Reviewing is important for retention. The more time you have to review what was learned that day, or week or year, the more students will be able to recall that information when needed. The end of the school year is the perfect time to review what   was covered that school year. I

"Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with the stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord." The 'Cons' of Homeschooling

Image
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" Colossians 3:23 There are lots of great reasons to homeschool, but there are a bunch of reasons why people don't homeschool too. If you are a seasoned homeschooling parent, I know you've heard every reason why you shouldn't be homeschooling your kids. If you are thinking about homeschooling, I'm sure you will be hearing about it soon. Either way, let's look into the 'downside' of homeschooling together.  I saw cost listed as a limiting factor to homeschooling because public education is 'free'. Public education is not even close to free. First of all, it is paid by taxes whether you have kids or not. And secondly there are school fees, constant fundraisers, school clothes, school supplies, school lunches and snacks, the constant replacing of items lost and damaged and if you are working, the cost of child care before and after school. Sending your child to schoo

Stay Motivated!

"And let us not grow weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Galatians   6:9   How do you keep going? How do you stay motivated? It's hard when things get tiresome, or monotonous or downright difficult, especially when no one is looking. It is a vital skill for every homeschooler, business owner, or really anyone with a goal to reach.  It is easy to take off early, to prioritize other household chores or to waste too much time figuring out what to do next.   The self motivation that comes with homeschooling is one of the many skills that will set a homeschooler apart from the mainstream.   Here is what we do to stay motivated and on task. These tips will work to help you stay motivated in any situation.   In summary it is plan, plan, plan.

3 Steps to a Better Homeschool

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. " Proverbs 22:6   3 Steps to a better homeschool. They all start with 'R' and you can start any of them today! These 3 points have given me the most success in the classroom and now at home with my own kids.   They are, in short, real, record, and review! Let's get into it! Why do you homeschool? For a lot of us, it is because we striving to live a more genuine life with our family. So why do we use a boring workbook to teach? Is that real? Genuine? A couple ways I try to make our homeschool applicable to real life is through word problems and projects based learning. If you can plant 16 carrots per square foot and we want to plant 40 square feet of carrots how many seeds do we need? That question is a lot more engaging than a simple, 16 x 40 = _. Reading, writing and solving math problems that are real and useful to your family's business or surv

What I'm teaching today. February 17, 2021

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" Micah 6:8 This is going to be a little series where I just let you know what I have planned to teach today.  My goal is to give you ideas and inspiration to teach your best at home.  I am not going to add links to any paid products here.  If you want links to any of the products here, message me down below.  If it is something people are interested in, I'll start adding them in future posts.  Let's get started.   I homeschool my 2 children. My daughter is learning at a grade 2/3 level, my son is learning at a grade 4/5 level.  Both are stronger in math than writing.   The first thing I do every morning is put out their morning work.  Both my kids write out the date, their spelling words for the week and do a short math problem that is part of the morning work. My son's spelling words are based on things we are l

Using Technology for Math Class

Image
"I can do all things through Christ, which strengthenth me."  Philippians 4:13   If you love teaching math, online math games and activities can deepen understanding for your children and students. If you are like many elementary teachers and parents, online math games and activities can fill gaps in math teaching or learning.  Either way, using technology to help teach math can be academically rewarding.  Here are some resources I use, and the pros and cons for each.
